To take it a step further, I&#039;d be curious to see how much telecomms profit from handsets vs service; specifically AT&amp;T and the iPhone.</description>

		<description>I don&#039;t know that backwards compatibility in consoles is such a good example.  Most vendors find they have to drop it for cost reasons and some of the most popular consoles (Playstation 1, SNES) were not backwards compatible to anything whereas others (Sega&#039;s 32X most famously) were highly backwards compatible but won little share. Of course there are others (Wii, Gameboy Light/Pocket/Color/Advance/DS) that were compatible and arguably led their markets. A risky business...</description>

		<description>Additional Chicken &amp; egg Strategy  ? - Associate yourself with a clear benefit of a low cost complementary service and give it away. 

We offered energy savings in buildings but clients did not rush to us. We won prizes, but still clients did not come. We even got grants so we could offer our services for free - no deal But ... when we started working on an elegant way of proving exactly how much we were saving people things changed. We are now selling the original service (at very high premium) on top of very low cost audited mechanism to prove savings in buildings (which is self-evidently useful to measure other savings even if achieved by our competitors) - I guess this would be equivalent to &quot;giving away&quot; video  cameras to document an extreme sky-diving experience.  Client wants to show she is cool - give her a cheap re-usable way of proving it while paying a fortune for something that the &quot;cheapie&quot; proves is cool - the service.  It turns out profitable growth of demand for the complementary service is totally outstripping our scalability so we are starting to look for funding of the &quot;other&quot; business, originally just a spin-off.

If that&#039;s another strategy in your book Chris then glad to have contributed. I only wish I could claim it was deliberate.

A big challenge for something like Twitter is getting a densely connected set of users to start sending each other messages.  They took advantage of the temporary network topology of the conference to jump-start the process, especially by putting up the big screen TVs in the conference hallways streaming messages.  They got the benefit of showing off a &quot;populated&quot; view of the service as well as the word of mouth when conference attendants dispersed afterwards.  Pretty brilliant move.</description>

		<description>I don&#039;t know whether this merits consideration as a separate strategy or is a common theme running through the others, but creating an ecosystem where many vendors can contribute to the complete product is another way to be successful.  For example, there is a symbiotic relationship between television manufacturers, aftermarket remote control manufacturers, VCR manufacturers, antenna manufacturers, etc.  By creating standard interfaces, you allow 3rd parties to develop related products and have a vested interest in your success.</description>
